V. Vis-à-vis Me: Following Varnum‘s Wheel
Recreating the 1908 European bicycle tour of my great grandfather, Varnum A. Parish.
Fellow Adventurer,
One hundred and fifteen years ago, on August 5, 1908, my mother's mother's father,
Varnum A. Parish, set off from Momence Illinois, USA to ride his bicycle
throughout Europe. Varnum wrote careful and detailed daily
diaries
during his entire four-month
tour. His friend and cycling companion, Maximilian Jurascheck ( later, Maximilian St. George,
who extended the tour to two years and sixteen thousand miles ), went on
to write a book about the experience,
Traveling Light or Cycling Europe on Fifty Cents a Day.
Through the writings of Varnum and Max, I learned of the generosity and kindness of the people
these young men befriended along the way. Varnum and Max slept in the barns
of humble farmers, appreciatively shared meals with priests, and even spent the
afternoon in conversation with a price and princesses.
It is in honor of these kind people that I'm attempting to reproduce V. and Max's adventure
and to create a documentary film of my journey as it emerges.
What stories of grand experience will we pass on to the children of the children of our
children?
Enthusiastic Regards,
Juniper Hunter
